I am from Nyala, and I now live in Oslo. A friend who had worked in Darfur told me about a collection of marqub shoes she had brought from Sudan. She wanted the shoes to show something of the region she valued: its culture and the work of its makers.
When she was moving house, she offered the remaining collection to me. The boxes arrived at my home. I began looking closely at the shoes, their shapes, their stitching and the packaging made for the original project.
I wanted to build a new chapter around them. For me, that begins with looking carefully at each pair and telling the story honestly. The photographs show the collection we have received; the work now is to document its condition, fit and materials before offering individual pairs for sale.
